News Alert – Far East–South Africa Shipping Update – Severe Space Shortage

Dear Clients and Partners,

There is currently a major shortage of shipping space on the Far East–South Africa trade lane.

KEY FACTORS BEHIND THE SPACE SHORTAGE

1. Early Peak Season Demand
Importers are shipping earlier than usual to prepare for Black Friday and the festive season, causing a sharp rise in demand and pressure on space and rates.

2. Tariff-Driven Demand Surge
The temporary 90-day tariff reduction between China and the U.S. triggered a spike in exports from China to the US, pulling capacity away from other trade lanes.

3. Dry Docking for Emissions Compliance
Vessels are undergoing dry docking to install energy-efficient systems and alternative fuel technologies, in line with IMO and EU regulations. This has led to schedule disruptions and blank sailings.

4. Maersk Booking Suspension
Maersk has temporarily suspended spot bookings from Asia to South Africa, further tightening available space.

5. Port Congestion at Transshipment Hubs
Heavy congestion at Singapore and Tanjung Pelepas is causing delays and schedule instability, which are expected to continue throughout the Peak Season.

6. Adverse Weather Conditions
Severe weather at major ports like Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, and Singapore is compounding delays and affecting vessel reliability

ADDITIONAL MARKET INTELLIGENCE

Peak Season Surcharges / Rate increases:
Shipping lines are increasing rates or introducing additional peak season surcharges – in some cases price increases are being introduced every 2 weeks.

Geopolitical Disruptions / Red Sea Disruptions:
Ongoing rerouting of vessels around the Cape of Good Hope due to Red Sea security concerns has increased transit times and operational costs, especially on Asia–Europe routes. This has indirectly affected global container availability and pricing.

In light of these challenges, we strongly encourage all our clients and partners to pre-book shipments as early as possible to secure space and avoid delays.

As always, Inter-Sped remains fully committed and will do everything we can to minimize disruptions and keep your cargo moving smoothly.

Best Regards
JJ & The Inter-Sped team
